So I’m back… seriously… I think. All I can say is that I’m finally feeling better after round one with the flu and round two of a cold that left me without a voice. Being that the primary function of my job requires me to communicate, the past week was a bit frustrating to say the least. But alas, my voice has made its triumphant return!
When ministering to students it can often be hard to find your voice. I recently heard that the average youth pastor remains in their position for about 8-10 months. With all that turnaround, it’s easy to see why students might be hesitant to trust you just because you walked in the door. Today, I want to write about two things that will help you find your voice in any arena of life.
1. Be Consistent
In life we love to hype the dramatic and the flashy. We have become a highlight society.
As a result, consistency is wildly undervalued.
Consistency is like an offensive lineman in football. While all the glory goes to the quarterback or running back, the line creates the pocket for the QB or gives the running back an alley to run into. They are the unsung heroes of a football team.
In ministry, consistency is your unsung hero. Consistency is the glue that keeps everything together. Students need to know that you are there. Talent will not compensate for the absence of consistency in the realm of eternity.
So stick in there. Fight through adversity. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it!
2. Be a Person of Character
Consistency without character is like a police officer without a donut, something’s not right! I’ve heard it said that character is “who you are in the dark”.
While much of ministry is very public, the foundation to a healthy ministry is very private. As a leader, do you pray (not just for ministry needs!)? Do you read your Bible consistently? Do you follow through on commitments? Do you have Godly people who have a voice in your life?
Too many ministries have flash, but no foundation. Students have plenty of hype in their lives, they need people of consistency and character.
Take some time today to ask God if you’re lacking in either area. Chances are, all of us can do better, and those around us will be grateful for the improvement!
