Today’s tip revolves around evaluation. If you’ve read our blog before, you may have noticed that I’m not only big on introspection, but also on having people in your life that can give necessary feedback.
As I run across successful people, I’ve noticed a few important traits.
1) They Admit Their Wrongs
Believe it or not, lack of talent is rarely the reason people have problems.
On the other hand, stubbornness is. In fact, people who refuse to say they’re wrong are people who don’t have a good grasp on responsibility.
As I read through the Bible, I see people like Daniel, Nehemiah and Jesus taking responsibility for things they weren’t even responsible for!
All of them understood that leadership isn’t a battle of who’s ego can win at the end of the day. The best leadership is done with humility and admits when there is wrong.
2) They Acknowledge Their Weaknesses
In just about every job interview, you will be asked what your strengths and weaknesses are. We tend to gravitate to a long list of strengths and spin our weaknesses as a faux strength.
The reason for this is because we are fearful that a weakness will be viewed as overall weakness.
Here’s two things to remember about this.
First off, if an employer expects you to be good at everything, you’re going to grow frustrated very quickly.
Secondly, you need to come to grips with your weaknesses so you can find an environment where you will thrive. Surround yourself with people who are strong in your weakness.
When you look throughout Scripture, you see flawed people who were made better when they worked as a team, because no one can do it all.
3) They Keep Themselves Accountable
No matter how far you go in life, you need accountability. Unfettered power leads to corruption of character.
In your walk with God, no success is more important than the process.
Mark Batterson said, “We view the goal as the goal, but God views the process as the goal.”
Accountability eliminates an “ends justifies the means” attitude. How you do things is just as important as what you do. Find people who will call you out on more than just your performance, seek people who will question you about the process.
So what kind of leader are you? Do you need to start making changes? Chances are, we all do. So start today and let God use you to be the leader He’s called you to be!
